Pattern for Gartshore & Cowie (2015) is a collaboration with Julia Campbell-Such created for At the Waterfront, curated by Tara Bursey for Winterfest on the former site of Gartshore-Cowie Ironworks in Hamilton, ON. The kinetic sculpture uses a small DC motor to drive a wooden gear and two aluminum castings of it. These in turn lift three small chairs up and down in a playful pattern. The piece was inspired by the story of child workers in the mid-1800s who rode a two-story industrial water pump like a rocking horse, carving out a moment for play in an otherwise difficult work day.
Pattern for Gartshore & Cowie also appeared as part of Toronto Design Offsite Festival in 2016.
